When to Use Yellow in the Kitchen

Are you a sunny optimist? Or do you just wish you could channel that vibe? Associated with happiness, exuberance and positivity, yellow is an excellent color choice for the kitchen. Since yellow reflects a large amount of visible light compared with other colors, it's best to limit brighter shades of this attention-getting hue to small doses and materials that you really want to stand out.

Here are my top yellow paint picks and eight eye-catching yellow Houzz kitchens to inspire you...more

Obsessed With Gray in the Kitchen

Occasionally I get a little design bug in my bonnet (read "really cool hat") on a particular color or maybe an interesting tile texture or just whatever. Right now, my obsession is all about using gray in its many different forms. Most home owners are hesitant to use this particular color because of the common misconception that gray is a "cold" color. However, in my obsession I've been working diligently to find just the perfect shades of gray. The beauty of gray is that it looks great in both paint and so many other textures. Gray can be one of the best neutrals because it works with nearly every other color out there. It just depends on the particular shade, and warmth or coolness of the tone.

This idea-book is all about how to use gray in your kitchen without making the space cold or uninviting. You'll see both contemporary and traditional spaces, speaking to the sheer adaptability of this color...more

When to Use Gray in the Kitchen

Gray is continuing its run as a popular neutral hue in homes. It’s still a bit of an unconventional choice as the predominant color in a kitchen, but that is quickly changing, as evidenced by the increasing number of gorgeous gray kitchens appearing on Houzz.

Gray can appear austere and chilly compared to its warmer neutral counterparts, beige and tan. The trick to working with it is to pair it with a warm material, such as wood, or a contrasting hot and bold hue, such as red, orange or yellow. A gray kitchen may not be the best choice if you live someplace with year-round cool, overcast and rainy days, but it’s an excellent color for a kitchen in a hot climate — it will give your kitchen a cool and elegant vibe.

Check out my top gray paint picks for kitchens below, as well as 10 tasty kitchens on Houzz that feature this elegant hue...more

Light-drenched sunrooms are a welcome feature in homes and help foster an indoor-outdoor connection. Sunrooms and Conservatories

Biophilic (meaning “nature-loving”) design is considered by many to be the missing piece in green architecture today. Derived in part from the life’s work of prominent American biologist E.O. Wilson, this emerging design discipline strives to move modern building practice into the same sustainable direction as the green building movement. But it goes further, seeking not only to minimize impact on planetary resources, but to actively improve human health, well-being and productivity. Today, many architects and designers are mining their intuitions for hints at what our collective human nature has been hungering for in the built environment. This Healthy Home series celebrates time-tested, rather than high-tech, strategies for turning your home into a biophilic paradise, starting with the biophilic benefits of sunrooms and conservatories...more

    Elements of the Perfect Sunroom

Sunrooms support leisurely living and increase square footage — often with lower construction costs than a fully finished room. If you're thinking about someday adding a sunroom or turning an existing space into a sunny retreat, here are some features to consider. And if you're not, maybe these photos will change your mind...more

Blast De-cluttering Roadblocks Once and for All

There is enough advice on de-cluttering and organizing to fill an entire wing of a bookstore, and a quick online search brings up billions of results. But if it were as simple as picking up a book and following the author’s advice, wouldn’t we all have perfectly organized, streamlined homes? Well, judging from my own experience, and from the experiences of the many Houzz readers who have chimed in with comments on the subject, there is a lot more to culling clutter than tossing things in a bin. Our relationship with our home, and the things in it, is charged with emotion — it’s not so easy to let go of things when something as simple as a rusted tackle box or a worn photograph can bring memories flooding back. In the past several months we have been exploring this topic, and some of the best tips from our conversations are pulled together in this guide.

Below, find eight ways to move through your own mental and emotional roadblocks to work through your clutter, from the inside out...more

Questions to Overcome a De-cluttering Roadblock

Let’s face it: For many of us, de=cluttering is really hard. First you have to find the time. Then you must make difficult decisions about what to keep and what to let go. Next you must figure out what to do with everything, whether that involves storing, selling or donating. And finally, you must follow through on your plan.

These tasks can be overwhelming, so it’s no wonder that many of us at some point hit a de=cluttering roadblock. And that’s OK. If you are letting go of something, you have to be emotionally ready to make that decision. If you’re not, you may find that certain items keep going into the “maybe” pile. Here are some questions to ask yourself when you can’t decide about a specific belonging. In my experience as a professional organizer, these questions often help my clients break through their de=cluttering block...more

When to Paint Your Home Yellow

Thinking of making your home's exterior color evoke summertime and sunshine? Then consider yellow. Ranging from soft and earth toned to more electric and brash, yellow serves a home's exterior well. Whether they're set off by winter's snow and gray skies or summer's green landscape and blue skies, yellow homes make their presence known.

I find that the color yellow is best used for traditional-style homes. From the more ocher yellows of stuccoed exteriors on Tuscan villas to the bright, almost neon palette of some 19th-century exteriors, yellow keeps a home warm, welcoming and cheerful.

So let's leave white to those most rational and platonic of home styles, such as colonial and modernist, and explore using some joyous yellow...more
